“WHEN IT COMES TO PAINTINGS, IT IS ALWAYS A SURPRISE!

His name is Rodrigo Alzamora and he is one of the Portuguese painters of the moment. He came to London invited by a well established art fair that took place in Chelsea and that HORA H could not miss! Other illustrious Portuguese guests were also present: The Ambassador of Portugal in the United Kingdom, Mr João de Vallera, and the well known Consul Fernando Figueirinhas.

We were impressed by such a kind and easy going painter that, judging from the two paintings he brought to the exhibition, could have presented himself as this rather distant and scornful big shot artist instead… He is a man and painter, just that…It was in deed a pleasure to meet such a person.

HELLO Rodrigo. It is a pleasure to be here tonight talking with you.

The pleasure is all mine.

How would you define yourself as a painter and a person?

Well, I am 42 years old and a person that has had the opportunity to live a bit around the world, studying a lot and painting a lot for many years, trying several painting style experiences and such…Lately, and I hope it is a sign of maturity, as I have the technical aspects under control I have developed today a much broader concern about the marketing aspects: Reaching new markets as I am making an effort to bring my paintings to the people that might enjoy them, wherever they are. Painting alone is no longer enough.

We know that this exhibition is very well established in Chelsea. Was it difficult to get here?

I was invited to participate in this show. There is a an admission and selection process and finally the chosen candidates will decide if they want to participate or not. London was not really on my exhibition plans for the short term but I took the opportunity and here I am.

Do you think that the Portuguese that live in London are interested in your work?

Well, when it comes to paintings it is always a surprise! There is no way to know for sure. Sometimes we think that we have the perfect public in front of us and it proves to be a mistake. Some other times we expect very little and have a very warm reception. It is very hard to tell, actually. Nothing like going to the exhibition, hang on the paintings and see what happens. So far, I feel that I have had a great response from the Portuguese community in London. I have had many great guests such as Mr Ambassador, Mr Consul and several journalists from the Portuguese publications such as this one. Many other Portuguese visitors as well that have made very complimentary comments about my paintings.

You did not forget about Portugal , did you?

Of course not! I have brought only two paintings, and one of them is about our dear Amália Rodrigues, this great and beloved Fado singer.

What are your references amongst painters?

So many! In Portugal I would say it is Paula Rego. I like Pomar a lot, as well, even if his work is less compatible with my current line of work.  I admire them both, very much. I also do follow many international painters.

How would you define your style?

I am obsessed with people, so I suppose this makes me a “figurative painter”. Probably a “contemporary new figurative painter” if you have to stick a label on my work…

What are your plans for the short term?

The painting world is very creative and movable even with art shows themselves, so you need to have at least 10 in view, in order to materialize one or two. As I never know which ones will happen and which ones will die along the way I have learned to never make announcements before the actual invitations are printed and mailed. So far, many possibilities for the near future but I will get back to you when a few will materialize…

Would you like to leave some message for the Portuguese community?

Thank you very much for your support. It was great coming to London in order to exhibit for the first time. It is always quite a strange sensation, isn’t it? My small contribution towards the Portuguese community of London was to bring my “Amália Rodrigues” painting as a tribute to both our beloved Amália and to our Portuguese comunity in London.

“THE PAINTER RODRIGO ALZAMORA EXHIBITED IN LONDON

Rodrigo Alzamora was one of the international painters invited by the Parallax art fair that took place from 13-14 October, 2012 in the Chelsea Town Hall.

Participating with two paintings, one of them dedicated to Amalia Rodrigues, the artist confessed to AS NOTICIAS that “after having made several exhibitions in Portugal that had a good response, it is now time to try to bring my work to a more international market, which is what brings me to London. This fair is a first step, a test towards that goal.”

Rodrigo Alzamora was pleasantly surprised by the attendance to his stand in the fair, explaining that “There was an important support from the Portuguese community: I was honored with the visit of  Mr Ambassador, Mr Consul, several newspapers and members of the local community.”

As a direct result of this exhibition, Rodrigo Alzamora hopes to have the opportunity to participate in future similar shows that might even take place in larger fairs and maybe some exhibition possibilities through the London art gallery circuit.
